Posted by on Saturday Jan 2, 2010 Under College, Online Education

If you are a profession-aspirant person but you don’t have the time to pursue a degree module in a university, a distance learning degree is a good option you might prefer. It is more affordable than a regular degree module at a university or college. The professor’s skills are more utilized by a distance learning program since there are limited classroom sessions available. The professors use all their time for clearing questions and thus improving the performance of the entire program.

The program uses the video speech re-recorded by the professors and this cuts down the sum of time one has to use repeating the same materials. It gives more time for individual student. The quality of such a degree program is basically very good because the professors who are taking the classes are specialists in their field. It is an benefit that the students who attending this program can avail such a good lecture at the comfort of their homes.

In distance learning program, there is no one who will motivate you to do the learning. It is totally your choice and should have the commitment to better your profession by completing the module. Otherwise, you will not be able to fruitfully complete the module. Some universities and colleges reimbursement the sum you paid in case you are not able to continue your studies after joining the module. But, in case of such a program, you will not be eligible for any refunds once you have joined your module. Read More

Choosing a College Major and Minor

Posted by on Tuesday Dec 22, 2009 Under College, Education

Seniors in high school often have to make an important decision, which college major to choose. There are many majors to choose out of and students have to start choosing their major before even stepping foot on college campus. It is however, often a difficult decision because students have many interests and not enough expertise to make a decision.

Many college students, in fact, change their majors during their college years; sometimes, students have to stay in college for 5 or 6 years because of the changes. Nowadays, many college including the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University enter all of their students into a General Program during the first two years. However, some programs such as Engineering at North Carolina State University essentially force their students to start engineering when they take their first step on campus. So, it is still very important for a high school senior to evaluate his or her potential majors before applying to colleges and universities.

The most important factor in choosing a major is interest. It is a horrible idea to spend the next four years of your life studying something you despise then having to work 40 or more hours a week in a field that you find repulsive. However, most people generally do not prefer to study a field where there are extremely low salaries and high unemployment rate. Having a backup major is generally a good idea. Read More

Are the College Earning Numbers a Big Lie?

Posted by on Saturday Dec 19, 2009 Under College, Education

There has been a lot of hoopla over recent years over how important a college education is, and specifically how graduates with a college degree are going to supposedly make a million dollars more over the course of their lifetime than someone who isn’t. The only problem is, those numbers are false. The study itself has a lot of problems, and studying “The Big Payoff,” as the “unbiased” government study is titled, reveals this. First of all, the million dollar number doesn’t show up anywhere. The actual number is 890,000, and that’s for a best case scenario.

A second problem: work done from ages 18-24 isn’t counted. Even if a high school graduated is making minimum wage is going to make over one hundred thousand dollars over that time, and that’s assuming they never get a single promotion or a better opportunity. Another problem: debt is not taken into account at all. College graduates not only have to pay off their loans, but the interest that comes with them. Debt can also affect retirement funds, as a high school graduate can have a 401-K or IRA within a month or two of work, but a college graduate may have to keep delaying starting a retirement fund because of the student loan payments they have to deal with.

These are just a few of the issues that come up when reading the report that is quoted for the million dollar claim. This teaches soon to be college students maybe one of the most important lessons of life: think for yourself and don’t take anyone’s word as gold.

The University of Amsterdam

Posted by on Friday Dec 11, 2009 Under College, Education

First founded as the Athenaeum Illustre in 1632, the University of Amsterdam was built to educate students in Trade and Philosophy. During the early days, when this establishment was not yet a proper university, the lessons were generally given at the homes of the professors, and until the nineteenth century, the Athenaeum remained as a small institution, with no more than 250 students and eight teachers.

In 1877, the Athenaeum Illustre saw its boom when it was changed to Universiteit van Amsterdam, now known as UvA or University of Amsterdam. It was also during that time that the University of Amsterdam was permitted to bestow the highest educational degrees. Since the name change, years of rapid growth lay ahead. By 1900, it was recorded that there were about 900 students studying at the University of Amsterdam. This number had risen to 2,500 by 1935, and to 7,500 by 1960. The following years, more fields of study and research were introduced and the new university departments were formed.

The University of Amsterdam these days has already more than 22,000 students. It is also worth noting that from Trade to Philosophy, the original Athenaeum Illustre had expanded into a comprehensive university offering almost 60 disciplinary fields. Of these fields, the field of technology is an exception. Read More
